Simple Spring Floral Arrangement (with thrifted box!)
Using a thrift store find to make this simple spring floral arrangement today!
Spring, where are you?! It’s cold but at least the rain looks like it has stopped….for now anyway.
Has it been raining a bunch this winter where you are too? So much rain.
Thrilled to see the sun and hear the birds singing today. Even they’re happy!
I know it’s only early March, but I just could not wait any longer. I had to make something “springy” with colorful flowers to bring some happy spring into our home.
I stopped by Michael’s last week and picked up a bunch of pretty flowers that were buy one, get one free. (basically 50% off everything)
Best way to buy them besides finding them at the thrift store and reusing them. Which is even better if you can find some decent ones.
Simple Spring Floral Arrangement
This little thrift store find was the perfect container for them….
An old recipe box.
I don’t use a recipe box anymore so wasn’t sure what I’d turn this one into.
Then decided it’d be perfect for the flowers I bought.
I had originally considered using the top along with it in some way.
You know, like attached to the side or something.
In the end, I decided to just leave it off. I saved it though, so you never know where it might turn up later!!
I began by painting it black.
Then used the same technique to give it a weathered wood look like I did in this post.
It’s pretty simple. Just a layering of paint.
Once it was done, I sealed it with one of my favorite sealers, here.
Then added some floral foam to the box and began adding flowers.
I don’t really have a plan for this, just adding them in here and there, until I like the way it looks.
I did keep the long ones around the bottom sides.
Kind of flowing out around the edges.
I just keep adding until I’m happy with how it looks.
I make a lot of these kinds of things here on the blog, wreaths, etc, but it’s not really my thing.
Painting furniture, doing other crafty things, etc, etc…but flower arranging, not so much.
But that’s the whole point.
I don’t think you have to be a flower-arranging whiz to be able to do it.
Just move them around until it turns into something pleasing to your eye.
I like it on the table in the dining room. Brings some happy spring right on in.
I may even have to add a few touches of spring to my styled bookcase shelves back there too.
But I also might use it in my family room…
Or maybe I’ll just have to make more than one. ;)
I love all the happy colors in this one.
Here are a few more spring floral arrangement projects I’ve done over the years:
- DIY Pink & Blue Wreath
- Simple Spring Wreath (pink and white)
- DIY Hydrangea Wreath
- Flower Pail Wreath Idea (spring or summer)
So, are you as ready for spring as I am??
I can’t wait!
And we get one step closer this weekend….changing the clocks. SO excited for that!
Baby steps to warmer weather. Yes!
PIN it to save it!
Check out what I did with this old frame next time!
UPDATE!! See it now here!!
Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
xoxo
Wow, Nancy, such a clever recreation! I adore how the flowers look in this little renewed box! Great going!
Thanks so much, Christina! :) It’s a happy little box now! xo
What a great nod to Spring Nancy! Your arrangement is very pretty and I love how you upcycled that recipe box for it! We have 15″ of snow from Sundays storm still piled up outside. It has been so cold that nothing has really melted yet and “Spring” seems so far away, lol! Looking at the arrangements and wreaths that you have created and shared here, really brightened my morning, thank you!!!
Thanks so much, Kaycee! :) And oh no!! I shouldn’t complain about all the rain we’ve been having because it’s better than snow! (but not prettier! ;) ) And I’m so glad to hear that!! Hoping the snow melts away and spring comes soon for you too! xoxo
So much better now, Nancy! I’m sure you’ll find a good use for that lid!
Thanks, Marcie! :) I’m thinking I might!! Not sure what just yet though! xo
I loved with the word on it…that would be so pretty in a kitchen. I will look for one of these in thrift stores.
Aw, yes, depends on the style of the kitchen but you are right, it might! :) Good luck!! Keep an eye out, can find all kinds of these things. xo
So pretty! I have been on the hunt for faux flowers for soooo long. I’ve looked at hobby lobby & Michael’s and everywhere else that has a faux flowers! I just can’t find anything that looks anything like what you made. I have tons of faux greenery but, flowers and I have issues! Am I being too picky? Is there a secret to finding faux flowers that I’m missing?
Aw bummer! I think they had just put these out not too long before. The whole spring flower isle. (not with the rest of the florals) I don’t think there is a secret! I just usually pull things out and bunch them up in my cart…and add or take away until I like the “bunch” I’m creating. :) xo
I felt compelled to go to hobby lobby yesterday and find flowers! And you are totally right- they had all the spring flowers out & I found some amazing looking flowers. Usually they have there flowers on sale but, nope. No sale. So EACH flower was $2.99-7.99! So, I walked away because I know they will be on sale once again. I’m about to walk into Michael’s. All their flowers are on sale & I have an amazing coupon. I have one medium size Rae Dunn hanging pot I’m been trying to fill forever! Hopefully today is the day! Thanks for the help!
Yay!! But boo to no sale! Next week! ;) Hoping you found some pretties at Michael’s! xoxo
This is so pretty, and you did a fabulous job! I love making arrangements with faux flowers and greenery, and learned even more about it years ago when I was a Home Interiors decorator. Michaelās has the pretties florals! Iām a huge āHometownā show fan, and I recently heard Erin refer to āthrillers, fillers, and spillersā in reference to windowbox plantings; I think that is a great way to look at, large feature blooms, small fillers (like babyās breath for example) and greenery to trail over the sides. I also like to find simple greenery wreaths and arrangements and then add small filler stems and flowers to change up the look, just by inserting the stems into the foam or twig base. Now Iām inspired to start working on some spring arrangements! Winter has really hung on this year, we had dangerous wind chills earlier this week here in Oklahoma and I am really ready for warm weather!
Thanks so much, Vicki! :) I just love that!! Thanks so much for sharing. I will definitely have to remember it for the next ones I do! And yes, winter is really hanging on, no kidding! Ugh! I’m SO ready too! Hope you have a great weekend! xo
I can’t believe you painted over that beautiful box ha ha…so much better and it makes a great planter! XOXO
Oh my gosh, I know, right?!! haha Thanks, Christy! :) xoxo
