Demilune Table Makeover with Flat Finish
$29 ReStore find… a Demilune Table Makeover with a gorgeous flat finish! Beautiful Ash paint and a surprise inside the drawer too!
Hello friends and happy Trashy Treasure Tuesday! Today my friends and I are sharing our “trashy” makeovers. Every second Tuesday of the month we get together and share our latest finds.
Today, I’m sharing a demilune table, a half-moon table—I’ve even seen it called a hallway table!
Whatever you call it, it’s getting a makeover today! ha! And I’m using our brand new Ultra Guard Flat Finish. It’s the first time I’m using it. (it comes in Flat and Satin) You can read about it here and hear more further down the page.
Demilune Table Makeover with Flat Finish
I found this table at the ReStore for $29. That was actually a little pricey to me but hey, it’s still cheaper than buying new furniture retail.
Although it looks like an antique, it definitely is not.
It’s just a cheap knock-off. The inside drawer bottom is pressboard, but that’s okay! I’m going to make it look like a high-end piece.
MATERIALS SOURCE LIST (Demilune Table Makeover)
- TSP Alternative
- Continuous Sprayer
- Ash Fusion Mineral Paint
- Ultra Guard in Flat Finish
- Bronze Gilder’s Paste
- Harlequin Transfer in Gold
- Polishing Pad
Prefer to shop on Etsy? I have an Etsy shop also, here!
I began by lightly sanding the whole thing, then cleaning well with our TSP Alternative (in our continuous sprayer).
Then I painted two coats of Ash. I just love this “black” shade. It’s such an elegant soft black.
Once that was dry, I applied the Ultra Guard Flat Finish for extra durability. Fusion Mineral Paint does not require a topcoat but I wanted to give this one the extra durability and check out this brand-new topcoat. Especially over this dark paint!
I love that this topcoat can be applied over darn finishes with no problem.
And I have to say, it applied like a dream! Long “open” time and no “ghosting” on the dark finish. Nice!
You can read all about it here!
I gave the knob a little something-something too.
Glammed it up a bit with some Bronze Gilder’s Paste.
So much better!
The drawer got a little glam too. I decided to use this Harlequin transfer on the bottom.
I used this same transfer on this project here >>> How To Paint Wash A Basket
To cut it to fit, I first used this paper to make a template to follow.
I simply pressed it in and around the edges and then cut it out following those folds/marks.
Then I laid it on my transfer where I wanted it to be, marked it, and cut it out.
Perfect!
Next, I transferred the Harlequin design to the bottom of the drawer. If you are new to transfers, I’ve written an entire post detailing how to use them.
You can read all about it here >>> How To Use Rub On Decor Transfers
Once it was transferred, I used a Polishing Pad to burnish the edges of the transfer.
See those clear-ish edges around the gold areas??
And below where I’ve polished on the left and where I haven’t on the right?
It just really makes the edges of the transfer look so much better especially on darker colors like this.
Left side compared to right side below. See the difference?
Once that was done, I applied the Ultra Guard over top of this as well.
And done!
Isn’t it such an elegant looking piece now?? Surely not looking like a $29 ReStore buy anymore!
Decorated a little for Christmas.
Surprise! I love a little pop of fun inside the drawers.
Half-moon tables are so versatile. You can use them in so many places in your home.
I really love the soft black on this piece. I was the perfect color for this sweet demilune table.
PIN it to save it!
Don’t go yet! Hop over and visit my friends’ makeovers too!
Have a wonderful week, friends!

It’s so striking now, Nancy. :)
Thank you, Larissa! xo
It looks amazing in black! And the pop of gold in the drawer is the perfect surprise inside! XOXO
Thanks, Christy! I don’t really have any black in my home but I do love it!! xo
I love your choices for this. It came out so nice. That top coat looks like a great top coat. Love the finish on it.
Thank you, Debra! It’s a great top coat and so easy to work with. I was impressed! xo
Very nice makeover! I love the special touches like the gilded hardware and pretty drawer lining, so classy!
Thanks so much, Vicki! They really do make it fun! xoxo
Beautiful! So much better!
Thanks, Cyndi!! I love the classic feel and elegance of black! xoxo
Beautiful Nancy! I think I have this transfer in my inventory… you’ve inspired me to take a look. I love it! Pinned XOXO
Thanks, Denise! Yes! It’s perfect for things just like this. xo
It’s absolutely gorgeous, Nancy! Your choices for this make-over are perfect. I love that table now!
Thank you, Michele! It’s a big difference for sure! Happy weekend to you! xoxo
My mom had one of these. It was painted a dark burgundy-red and had a little village scene painted around the front of it. It had no drawer. And I don’t know if it was an antique or not. She had it at least from the 60’s on; and I’m pretty sure it was second hand, so it was likely older than that. So, at least 60-70 years or more. Does that count as an antique, these days? 😆
I know, right?!! Some sort of vintage or antique anyway!! ha!
Absolutely beautiful! I have a hutch needing a makeover and was thinking black, but I really like the “Ash” color you used and the topcoat, too! Very inspired now so thank you so much for sharing this table with us!!
Thank you, Karolyn! So glad you were inspired! A soft black like Ash is my favorite! So elegant without being harsh. And the topcoat was a dream to work with. It was my first time using it (new product). :)
It’s stunning, Nancy. I’m looking for something exactly like that, would have grabbed it at $29 but surely it wouldn’t look as good as it does now! The pressboard drawer bottom is disappointing in such a lovely table, and no one would know it was there with the treatment you gave it. Filing this under Beautiful Inspiration!
Thanks, Marcie! $29 is definitely a bargain but yes, surprised at the pressboard drawer bottom too! But like you said, you’d never know now! Happy weekend to you! xo
Hi Nancy! You can never go wrong with Black or Ash in this case. I love how that transfer updated the drawer.
Thank you, Cheryl! I agree! xo
