Hello beautiful friends!

Today I’m sharing a super simple thrifted box/tray makeover! I had originally intended to paint over the whole thing and create something brand-new.

But hey, it’s the holidays so I thought I’d keep it and just add to it instead!

Poinsettia Christmas Tray Makeover

It was in great shape and I thought the writing was sweet and festive. I simply added to it to make it stand out a bit more.

outlining the red writing with white pen

Let me preface this by saying a white paint pen would’ve worked better. But all I had on hand was a white “chalk” pen which can be a little “bleedy”.
And since I will need to apply a protective coating to the transfers anyway, I’ll just cover the chalk ink as well.

As you can see above, I just traced the outside of all the lettering with white to make it pop. What a difference that made!
Plus, I also embellished the snowflakes a bit too.

Then I used this transfer to add even more festive embellishments.

I used a bunch of these but still have a bunch left to play around with. You might see one or two of them on upcoming projects!

This one directly on the bottom.

And this one on the side.

Which I decided to add to.

The other side…

And the back…

I sort of just put a big collage together.

And Piper snoozing over on the couch in the morning room.

I just kept adding!

Since I already had the main transfer down,  I cut these berries to fit to appear as if they were coming from behind the transfer.

And then used the “leftovers” over here.

Then added more on the other side. (this was also the leftover portion of the one above)

Filling in as needed.

Ta-da!

I just love transfers! So many creative ways to use them.

I put a few more inside as well.

To seal and protect everything, (including the chalk ink from smearing, etc) I sprayed several coats of this matte topcoat. I used a spray-type sealer because I was afraid a brush and liquid might smear the chalk pen outline on the front. No worries with a spray!

And done!

A very simple thrift store find updated for the holidays.

  1. This turned out really cute, so many things you can put inside. Only thing I would add(I don’t know when to stop!) would be a sprig of berries under the lettering to ground it.

    1. Thanks, Celia!! Yes! Lots of things this can be used for! And you and be both!! haha! I just kept going and going! And yes, that would be a good addition too! xo
