Refresh Stained Furniture and Updates
Refresh stained furniture easily! And quickly too! Change it up or just tone it down. A great way to update your space.
Hello, beautiful friends! I hope you are having a wonderful July! This summer is rolling on by so quickly. We have been busy, busy.
And yes, still working on that screened porch/room conversion, lol!! BUT my husband’s cousin is going to be helping him for the next few weeks to hopefully, mostly, finish it up! Yay, yippee, woohoo, I can’t contain my excitement!! hahaha!!
I’m SO beyond ready to get it done. We’ve been working on it a long time, but we are SO darn busy with so many other commitments these days that it’s been hard to devote the time to work on it regularly.
Here is the room. We are quite a bit further than this now, though.

I’ll post some updates soon as they get moving on it next week. So stay tuned for that.
Today, I’m sharing a little change-up we are making in the “morning room“. The new room we are working on will be our “office” on one side and a little sitting area on the other. I know that might sound odd to make that room our office, but I’m so thrilled. All the windows, sunshine, etc, what a beautiful place to sit and work. AND it’s downstairs, yippee! My husband and I both work from home, and currently, one of our extra bedrooms UPSTAIRS is our office. I’m so tired of going up and down those stairs 5,000 times a day. lol Plus, I’m looking forward to being more adjacent to the main living area of our home instead.
Just as a refresher, here is our office upstairs. (you can read all about it here)

We are planning on turning this little room into a home gym. Right now, I have to move a few things in the living room to do my workouts. I am SO excited to have a dedicated space for that soon.
The small sitting area in the new room will be a nice place to sit in the mornings (or whenever!). I’m planning two comfy chairs and a big ottoman over there. We are also moving our coffee bar setup out there, too. So that will leave space for something else in the old morning room where that resides now.

I have long since found a tall glass cabinet that will go in this place. It will get a makeover (and I’ll share with you all, of course, when I do!) first.
Refresh Stained Furniture
Okay, so here is what’s happening in there.
See the tiny wallpaper sample up there (and the paint chips on the ceiling?).

Yep, wallpaper is going up, and I’m painting the ceiling darker to cozy this space up a bit. We love how our painted ceiling turned out in our foyer and knew we wanted to do it somewhere else in the house, and this room is it.

I swore I would never put “real” wallpaper up again! EVER!! This house had tons, I think almost every room, and it was a bear to remove. But here we are, I dipped my toes in again with a “peel and stick” in the small half bath downstairs and love it! Here’s all the details on that.

It’s held up perfectly, by the way.
This new wallpaper is “stripable,” which means you should be able to simply peel it off in full sheets when you are tired of it. Wash the residue off the walls and back to square one. I guess we’ll see how that goes someday if I ever want to remove it!! lol
Okay, back to the tables.
I wasn’t loving how orange they were looking, and I considered doing several different things to them.
Refreshing the stain (and removing the orangey notes) is what I ended up going with. That is what I felt would go with the new feel of this room.
So, here they are again in their orange glory! I truly don’t remember them being that orange when I got them. This particular room is quite sunny, so maybe the sun has turned them somewhat over the years? It’s been about 7 years since I created this room. Wow, time flies!

This is a very SIMPLE stain refresh. It took me no time at all.
I should mention here that we are also removing the more traditional wainscoting we put up, oh, probably 18-ish years ago now, when I had a different style going on in here. It no longer matches the rest of our home with our board/batten and shiplap in all of the other rooms. Our home has more of a coastal feel these days that more closely matches, inside and out, where we live. I’m not sure if we are doing shiplap (horizontal or vertical) or a type of board and batten yet.
We will also be redoing the wainscoting in the foyer that was done around the same time. (scroll up to see it)
I used our Stain and Finishing Oil in this color. For the prep, all I did was wipe them down. I considered lightly sanding, but they were not slick at all, and I knew the stain would work well on them as-is.

You might think it’s very dark, but it’s really not. And it worked perfectly to tone down that orange and add a beautiful richness.
Below you can see the first set of legs that I’ve done, and the second set is very orangey.

And some pups in the background, lol.
Half done on the side, see how this refreshes the existing stain so well??

One done and one not done. Wow, so, so good! This is the best shot to show how absolutely different they look.

To apply, I simply use an old t-shirt and wipe it on. Let it sit for about 15 minutes and then wipe again to remove excess.
The difference on the coffee table is huge, too.

It truly could not be more simple to do. And I love that the Stain has the “finish” in it as well. This is not like PolyShades though, this actually sinks in.
So when you are done, you are done. Nice!
We went from orangey to a deeper, warm tone.

Much better!

And this girl who thinks she runs this place. Oh, wait, she does, haha! We wouldn’t have it any other way.

UPDATES
Alright, let me show you the paint I’m thinking about for the ceiling.

Anew Gray which does not look gray at all in person. It does, however, look like a very cool beige color without any orange or too warm tones.
Here is the sample painted on the ceiling.

Isn’t it wild how the paint chip always looks SO much lighter than it does on the wall? And even darker, on the ceiling. I knew this, so I purposely went for a very light paint chip, and it still looks wildly dark!
I tried to get them to paint match the gray/beige area on the wallpaper sample but they said it was too small of an area to do properly. So I picked the closest color I could find. I think I got pretty close.
However, in the meantime, I got the wallpaper in and am planning to go back to SW and see if they can color match a larger section of that color.
Then I will sample that and pick from these two shades.

Like the rug? Here is where I found it.
Ottoman is here.
Canvas wall art can be found here.
By the way, here is the wallpaper I got.

Wallpaper can be found here. It comes in several color variations. There is a very pretty aqua one as well!
And that is where we are at for now. I’ll be painting the ceiling and applying the wallpaper in the coming weeks. We’ll get to that woodwork/shiplap after we finish the other room. One big project at a time is all I can deal with these days! haha!
PIN it to save it!

Have a wonderful weekend!!
xoxo

Looking forward to seeing the new enclosed porch room! Sun can definitely make stain look more orangey! We built a new home a little over five years ago and used Minwax Special Walnut stain for the three bathroom and laundry room cabinets. It’s a nice light-medium neutral brown with no orange. However, in our primary bathroom we have a large window over the tub with privacy glass that gets morning sun. I noticed the cabinets facing the window seemed more orangey than ones in parts of the room that didn’t get so much sun and confirmed it when I opened the drawers. You can see a very clear difference where the cabinet fronts were covered by the drawer/door edges. The cabinets in the smaller bathrooms and laundry room without windows or that only have a small window that doesn’t face the cabinets still look like the original color. I had no idea it would do that, and it would be a major undertaking to sand them down (since they are sealed) and restain and reseal, and of course I would have to add a blind or shade to the window which defeats the purpose of the privacy window that lets in natural light. So frustrating! I prefer the stained wood look and don’t want to paint them.
Hi Nancy!
I love the darker stain. Thanks for sharing, I’m stealing that refresh idea from you for sure. I love the wallpaper. You and I have such similar taste it’s unreal. I love the taupes, aquas, light blues, warmer grays together. I, too am struggling trying to decide if I want to get peel and stick wallpaper and go for it, at least in my powder room which is white wainscoting and light paint above. (also attached to the laundry, mud room) Then a feature wall in my den area. I’m glad you sent the link for that wallpaper you chose, it’s beautiful. Enjoy your undertakings. I also am working on my hubby to enclose our back patio for years, we’ve been putting it off, but I feel we’ll get more use out of the space than we do now from sitting out back under roof. I can do that in another area where there are pavers by the patio with a gazebo or something so it’s just making a plan and starting! Enjoy the rest of your summer!
Hi Michele! Yes, those are my favorite too. I do have (and love) the peel and stick in our half bath. It’s held up wonderfully! I looked for a peel and stick for this room but didn’t find anything that was “right” and what I was looking for. So, unfortunately, I had to go with regular wallpaper. However, it is strippable and I watched a video of them removing it and it didn’t look bad at all. Peeling right on in full sheets. IF it actually works that way! ha!
We put off converting our screened porch for many years. (mostly thinking because we want to move eventually…we still do but here we are so…lol) It’s a win/win because if we do stay for a few more years, we will really enjoy the space. And if/when we do end up moving, it adds to the finished sq footage and value.
The getting started is always the hardest part! We have been sort of at a standstill because we are busy and doing this ourselves and the ceiling is a little bit of a bear to do. So, thankfully, we have help starting today. I’m so excited to start to see the light at the end of the tunnel on this project! xo
Yes, it sure can, its crazy how much so! It’s too bad that the sun does that because like you, I love the sunlight in the room. Adding the blind would not be the answer for me either. You could try doing something like what I did (adding some of this stain on top to tone it down). Of course, I’m sure it will happen again at some point being in the sun but could carry it along nicely for a few years anyway! I’m so thankful there are products available these days that make doing things like this so easy! :) xo
Everything looks great. You have a beautiful home.
Thanks so much, Lizzy!! I would say I can’t wait to be done but you know that never happens! There’s always something else to tackle! haha!! xoxo
Great changes and plans, Nancy. Love that color on your ceiling. It’s gorgeous. And your wallpaper you picked out is awesome.
Thanks, Michele! I can’t wait to see how it all looks when it get it finished! xoxo
Nancy, I so understand and empathize with your feeling of wanting to be DONE! That new room will be totally awesome.
Those tables turned out very well. I love the color you chose for them – not too dark and not too light. I think the ceiling paint will be warm and cozy and the paper will add a lot. All in all, GREAT JOB, as usual. Have a great weekend!
Thank you, Caye!! I’m hoping it all goes smoothly (and quickly!). I’m used to quick and easy projects these days so we’ll see!! ;) I can’t wait to see how it turns out! xo
