Paint a wood look finish…so quick and easy with paint and stain!

Hello, beautiful friends!

I hope you had an amazing fall weekend. My husband and I were in the Charlottesville area (Orange, VA, to be exact) staying at the Mayhurst Estate. The mountains are GLORIOUS this time of year. SO much beautiful color. I’ll be sharing all about it soon, maybe next week. You’ll definitely want to visit Mayhurst, I promise!

Mayhurst Estate

Okay, today, I am sharing all about the cabinet in the morning room/lounge?? Ha! I have no idea what to call this room now; it doesn’t really matter either – lounge, morning room, or comfy sitting room. ha!

Paint a Wood Look Finish

What does matter is what I did to this amazing piece.

orangey red cabinet before

Well, and what I did to make it go better with the current furnishings. As you can see, browns, tans, and a more coastal vibe are going on.
So, the reddish finish was not going to fly.

I knew I’d either darken it when staining it OR lighten it with paint and faux wood finish (stain).

And, of course, that’s precisely what I did!

Do you know why??

Because it’s SO much easier than stripping all of that wood in incredibly hard places to get to.

TAPE

The first thing I did was tape it to protect the glass.

SAND

Next, I lightly sanded all over.

Just enough to remove the slick finish.

After that, I experimented with various paints and stains to achieve the desired look.

I decided on Algonquin and Cappuccino Stain and Finishing Oil.

Look at that amazing, rich color. I love how the stain grabs the nooks and crannies. All of that just adds to the depth and overall wood look.

PAINT

Then I got to painting.

The inside got painted in Ash, which is a lovely, soft black. Apparently, I didn’t take a photo of that except for the finish photos. Whoops.

STAIN

Once the paint was fully dry (I waited several days), I applied the stain with a chip brush…

…and then used an old rag (old white t-shirt) to wipe it…

…to give it a wood look.

Here’s another look…

I love this effect!

That’s it! A whole new look, simple really!

REVEAL

I love the dark interior.

That color works perfectly in here now.

I did another one similar to this.

  1. The cabinet really does look better in the room rather than the reddish original. Good job! But, did you paint the puppy out of the picture? :-)

  2. Perfection in EVERY WAY! Love all the colors and stain finish. Looks great with that beautiful wall paper. Applause!

    1. Thanks so much, Jewels! So glad you think so!! I am thrilled with it. The poor thing sat for weeks because I just wasn’t sure what to do! xo

  3. Wow, Nancy – it is amazing. That was the perfect color to match that beautiful new wallpaper of yours. Now I am wondering why you did a black interior. I love black and use it all over the place, but I am so surprised you did black for that space. I could see a lighter dark brown or ivory but white is what I imagined you’d do to match it all up together. Anyway, it looks amazing and your outer painting and making look like wood is award winning perfection. Love it.

    1. Thanks, Michele! All valid points, for sure. I actually considered a lighter interior but since we changed this room from a “morning room” to more of a lounge-y “evening?” room (so silly but does describe it better now!), I thought the the darker interior would be better. Also, we are going to use it as a bar cabinet for wine/spirits, etc, so the darker interior goes well with that. I actually just purchased some LED strip lighting to put inside too. I’m sure I’ll share more pics of it with those in the future! :) xo

  4. That piece is absolutely perfect now in that space . .. color, style and scale. By the way, yours is one of the most spectacular gorgeous homes I’ve ever seen!
