This French Country style side table makeover is the defintion of glam! Touches of gold, creamy paint and a gorgeous French transfer.

Hello sweet friends!

It’s Trashy Treasure Tuesday and I’m sharing a “French Country” cutie today. If you like that style, you’re in for a treat. A little paint, some gold touches, some gold gilding and a transfer totally transformed this old, tired piece.

New here? A couple of my friends and I get together the second Tuesday of every month to share out latest “trashy treasures” with you. So, be sure to scroll all the way to the end of this post so you can see their makeovers too.

French Country Style Side Table Makeover

Here is how it looked when I found it at the ReStore. (that has been my “go to” lately since it’s been harder to find good furniture at the regular thrift stores these days).

wood table before makeover

Not bad! A little dinged up but a wash and you are good to go. But sometimes I like to completely transform and that’s what I did this time.

This sweet side table even as a drawer at the bottom. I love that.

This piece was REALLY secure and not going anywhere so I left it right there.

SAND

I lightly sanded the whole thing to remove any slickness.

CLEAN

Then I used our TSP Alternative to clean it all up before painting. (LOVE these bottles for TSP and water too!)

tsp spray bottle

PRIME

I used this primer before painting. Since it’s darker wood, I wanted to make sure it wouldn’t “bleed-thru” so used a Shellac based primer.

PAINT

Next, I used this soft, off-white, slightly beige/tan color called Chateau.

pint of chateau paint

I painted the whole thing with this. It only took one coat because I primed beforehand.

DRY BRUSH

After the paint was fully dry, I dry-brushed the entire thing with Casement. (off white)

It’s very subtle and hard to see in the final photos but it adds a softness and dimension.

Don’t know how to dry brush?? I’ve got a video I created to show you how here >>> “How To Dry Brush – All The Details

Gold Gilding

The transfer I’m using had gold in it so I decided to “paint” the accent areas with this marker.

gilding marker

Oh…my…gosh! What a game changer. SO easy and it looks so good.

So simple, I even used it on the knob from the drawer.

I adore the “brushed” look it has.

WAX WOOD DRAWER

I didn’t do much with the inside of the drawer except clean it and add a layer of wax to rejuvenate the wood.

ADD TRANSFER

This gorgeous transfer is the absolute star of the show!

I actually have another entire section I can use elsewhere. (the bottom half on the tube photo)

Applying the top half.

Don’t know how to use these transfers?? Check out this informative post I put together here. >>>  “How To Use Rub On Decor Transfers – Tips and More

And the bottom half.

I sealed the top with our Tough Coat Topcoat in Matte finish.

REVEAL

Don’t you just love the gold inset areas? I think it totally pulls it all together.

Oh, and I felt like there was plenty of gold so I chose to paint the metal embellishment behind the knob to blend in with the rest. I did give it a bit extra white dry brushing though. Unfortnately, the camera does not really pick that up well.front and top view of white table

I’ll share some up close photos to hopefully show you the dry brushing with the whiter paint.

The word Nancy is written in elegant, flowing black script, reminiscent of Chalk Style Paint For Furniture, with a heart shape used to form the dot above the letter i. The background is plain white.

  1. Wow, Nancy! It’s hard to believe that’s the same table! You sure made it shine!
It’s so feminine and pretty now.

      1. Beautiful Nancy; I love how you show us every little detail of the project from the beginning to the end and with such simplicity that anyone could accomplish. Thank you for all the forgotten pieces that you change into lovely treasured pieces.

  2. I couldn’t see how you’d improve that heavy table, Nancy, but I shouldn’t have doubted. What a difference the paint and transfer make! It’s really light and bright now.

  3. If you are putting this up for sale, I think it will go fast! It is so pretty now and doesn’t look “chunky” like it did before. I was skeptical about those legs, but they turned out so well. Good job, as usual Nancy!
