Hello Sweet Friends!

I’m at it again and moving right along over here!

Today I’m sharing how I’ve made over our 20 year old dining room furniture yet again.
And let me tell you, it was an easy furniture makeover, really!
I’m also sharing another fun change I made here.

So just as a refresher, here is what my dining room table looked like when we bought it…

That’s a terrible old cell phone photo, by the way.

…and here is what it looked like most previously (Christmas photo) after I painted and refinished it…
(you can visit this post to see all the details of that very first makeover… “Dining Room Makeover“)

I decided to get two new “coastal styled” chairs for the ends but still had 2 of these on each side.
The original chairs had broken in several places so they had to go.

As you can see, everything was a warm, off white shade.
I really wanted to make everything in here a bit more crisp.
And I wanted to lose the top half of the cabinet.

A nice, bright white was in order.

And here is what it looks like now that I gave it another easy furniture makeover….

A little different. ;) And SURPRISE! I moved the “DIY Farmhouse Inspired Chalkboard” from the kitchen over here where the mirror used to be.
You’ll have to stay tuned to see where the mirror is now….and what I did to it! ;)
I’m planning to move the “Grateful” sign over the sink in the kitchen.
I have a completely new “Gather” sign I’ve created to go in this spot that will match a bit better now that I’ve moved the chalkboard.

But anyway, let’s back up a bit.

When I took the top half of the china cabinet off, I knew I wanted to stain this top.

So I used some Citristrip remover to do the job of removing the paint. (love this stuff!)

You can see it at work here….

It came off so nicely.

Once it was all removed, I gave the top a light sanding.

Now it’s ready for stain.

I applied one coat of Espresso PolyShades. I wanted to save some time and get it close to the color on the table (without all the work).
I do wish I mixed it with one of my lighter shades of PolyShades. I sometimes forget how dark that Espresso is! ;)
I actually sanded a bit after it dried to remove some of the color.
Then I went back over with a poly topcoat.

Then I got rid of the dingy looking yellow….with bright white. :)

I didn’t need to sand the buffet, the table or chairs. That also made the job simple!
I applied the same sealer over the paint as I did to the stained top.

I also added new hardware. :)

I found these at TJ Maxx….

I sprayed them in bronze first because I wanted dark to show through, not gold.

Then I painted right over that with white, sanded a bit, sealed and done!

I love that they look like dock cleats. Perfect for my coastal decor.

I gave the cabinet and table a bit of distressing.

Sooo much happier with the bright white. It looks so clean and fresh.

You might have gotten a glimpse of my dining chairs in the photos above and coming up below. They are in fact, the same ones.
They too got a paint job, fabric and all! See them and the details, here.

I’d also LOVE to change out the light fixture too. It doesn’t really go anymore.

This is what I’m dreaming of…

Aw well, I can dream, can’t I?? ;)

This was honestly another really easy furniture makeover.

The Citristrip removed the paint on top like a dream.
The products I used are all wonderful to work with and made my job so much easier.
You know what the hardest part of any job is??? Getting started!
Ask me how I know?? haha It’s true though.

Love this easy furniture makeover? PIN it to save it!

  1. Very nice. You should paint your light fixture white and get blue glass shades. When I get on a re-purposing roll it’s hard to get off.

    1. Thank you Gloria! Actually I had considered that but replacing the globes (the main thing I don’t love) is what I’m finding is tough. They are pricey and I haven’t found many.
And yes, it is hard to get off that roll!! ;)

  2. Looks fantastic Nancy :) BTW I know what you mean when you say ‘the hardest part is getting started’..lol
    Happy Painting!

  3. Everything looks great. Just curious what you are going to do with the top of your china cabinet. I’m sure you have something up your sleeve.

    1. Thanks Linda! :) Oh no, I didn’t! I had no room for it anywhere else so ended up selling it to a very nice lady that was going to display it in her home. xo

  4. Bravo Nancy! Beautiful! I know how much time praying those chairs saves!!!! Hand painting a lot of furniture is back breaking! It looks really nice….dreaming of that sea glass too! I love white – it goes with everything! :)

  5. It looks wonderful, perfect for a nice Thanksgiving dinner. Why not paint the chandelier white ~ or duck egg blue ~ and change out the globes until you get around to a new one? Our local Habitat for Humanity Restores almost always have glass globes for just a couple dollars each so it would be a very inexpensive makeover!

    1. Thank you Karen! :) I have considered that but hadn’t been able to find the globes…and when I do they are so pricey! I will have to check Habitat and see what I can find over there! A couple/few dollars each, I can do! ;)

  6. I love the changes! Every time I think you have something looking great, you make it look even better! The buffet looks awesome and so do the chairs! I probably never would have thought to separate the two pieces of the buffet, but it really looks so awesome… and you know how I love stained tops! xo

  7. Love your buffet and table Nancy! When you used your Home Right sprayer on the chairs, did you have to thin the paint at all to go thru the sprayer or was it fine as is? I have a table and chair set I want to restain the top and paint the chairs but so scared to start. Not that it’s in pristine condition now but I could really make it worse!! ha.

    1. Thanks DeAnna! :)
Yep, a little bit of water needs to be added for the sprayer. It’s a breeze to paint this way…especially chairs!
Okay, on your project….just start! It’s only paint. ;) Imagine how proud and accomplished you will feel once done. Go get started and have fun too.
      xoxo

  8. Hi ! I have a question about Citristrip remover. I’ve never use it but I had another remover and the surface had to be washed with water afterwards and it was really smelly – as you can imagine, it’s not really a good thing in doing makeover of a big furniture piece. Doeas Citristrip have to be just scraped off?

    1. I love Citristrip! It’s great stuff however, you don’t remove it with water. It does need to be scraped off. It is also “smelly” but it smells like oranges. :)
