Sherwin Williams White Duck Exterior Home Paint (and home updates!)

Hello sweet friends! I hope you all had an amazing weekend! I can not believe the holidays are so close. Wow, not a bit ready for Christmas!! (gift buying OR decorating!) How about you??

I feel like this is the busiest we have been in a very long time. SO much going on. And today I thought I’d give a little update on our home and the paint color we chose for the exterior.

It looks dark but they always do in the chips, especially with a pure white background. We sampled several other colors…

SW warm white color chips

I was going for a warm white. Not a yellow-ish white or a gray-ish white or even a pink or green-toned white. Whites are harder than you think! I simply wanted a warm white! You’d think that’d be easy. ha!

Pure White was much too bright. Aesthetic White had a pink tone. Greek Villa was pretty but I wanted to go a bit warmer. White Duck was my first choice almost from the get-go. Pearly White was nice and a close second. (I also sampled China White BM, color matched at SW)

It’s so hard to choose from small samples. And by small samples I mean painting big blocks of paint on the back of our house!

See how they all look similar?? And all look so white??

But I had to be careful with my choice because we have woods and trees on every side. I know from experience how much the “green” from the trees tints the paint colors inside on the walls of our home so they most definitely affect the paint color on the exterior.

However, White Duck was the clear winner.

It’s perfectly warm without being yellow, has no weird pink or green undertones, is not grayish, and is not blindingly white. (which I most certainly did not want)

All of which are incredibly hard to convey in photographs!

But trust me when I say, it’s perfectly warm without calling it yellow!

This is a pretty accurate image of the color.

(you can find info on the wreath here)

I love how fresh and clean everything feels!

I always say it but it’s so true…paint is magic! I love paint.

Ahhh, and I just love this color.

Light Fixtures

Loving the new light fixtures too!

They are automatic so come on at dusk. Love that! You can find them here.

The doormat can be found here.
The ferns (found here) are still going strong! I had to touch them up with spray paint again though because the sun does fade them.
Link to the front door can be found here.

We still have to build and stain the wood columns. Hoping to have that done before Christmas.

SHUTTERS

Unfortunately, our wood shutters had seen better days! I mean, they are 40+ years old.

They are solid wood and rotten in several places so we decided to buy new ones. They are not up yet but hoping to get to that this week. I’m going to share the new ones and color today though.

And I finally picked the perfect color! Don’t ask me what it is because I ended up mixing colors then having SW color match…then got another color and ended up mixing those two!! haha! This color was harder to pick than the house paint.

As I was in the middle of this process, I happened to watch Reese Witherspoon’s reel, and well, look at that!! (this reel shows the exterior of her home right at the very beginning…)

Both house and shutters are very similar to the colors I was going for with our home!
Funny timing. Good actually, because my husband was not sold on the color of the shutters I was going for. He wanted to go with something a bit more gray. Then I showed him these screenshots and he was on board!

Hers are a bit darker than what I wanted but so close. (and isn’t her home just gorgeous??)

I love the color! It’s not gray, and it’s not green but somewhere in the middle. Very coastal which works perfectly for where we live.

You can find the shutters here. They are paintable shutters and I’m pretty pleased with them so far.

I used my paint sprayer (love this sprayer) to paint them and it was SO much quicker than trying to paint 10 shutters by hand.

Our white rockers needed some love too.

I sanded them somewhat and gave them a coat or two of white spray paint. (I had planned to spray them with my paint sprayer but on a visit to the ReStore found they had boxes of white spray paint for like $2 a can! So I did that instead.)

And I just realized this in the only “after” photo I have and it’s nighttime so I’ll have to share more of them once I do another porch post!

But they look fresh and clean too!

I also bought a few things to decorate the porch with. (one I painted, I’ll share it when I share the finished and decorated porch)

Stay tuned for that.

Room “ADDITION” Update

Just a quick shot or two of our screened porch and where we are with that now. Moving slowly but we are getting there.
Windows are in so that’s something! Doors, flooring, and ceiling are next.

One side…

The other side…

And WOW does it feel so large in there! I can not wait to get it done!!

Well, that’s it for now. I just wanted to give y’all an update on where we are and share a bit with you! I’ll be sharing more soon!!

Have a great week, friends!

xoxo

  1. BEAUTIFUL re-do!
Years ago when we painted our home (it went from icky ivory to granite grey), I drove past it when I came home! I saw the dog peering out the window and I have always wondered what she thought. Y’all did a great job and I know you are proud.

  2. We painted our home white just over 2 yrs ago with black trim. We didn’t have to think about which white since our home in Florida is stucco! Stucco paint come in pre-set colors!

  3. Nancy,
It looks beautiful! I totally understand the difficulty of choosing house color !
We are renovating a 1962 lake house
Went from yellow with cocoa brown trim to SW backdrop ( house color, rich dark brown) and SW urbane bronze( trim, even a darker black brown) we have white windows , barn red doors
Perfect for our piney woods lake location!
I’m excited to see your finished projects!! Happy Holidays to you and yours! Janet

  4. Love your color choices Nancy! Your house is going to look so charming & welcoming! Can’t wait to see the before & after pics as well as your completed screened-in porch.

  5. I totally love your front door Nancy! An exterior color paint for your home is very hard to select. We (well, my hubby did) just recently painted our home this summer! I’d pick out samples & he had a big board which got their own paint color & named! He said “no more samples please.” Well I came home with just 2 more! After sitting on our back porch, we both selected the same color (which was 1 of the last 2 I bought)! Paint sure makes a difference! Your color is very calming & no yellow hint – so pretty! I cannot wait to see your back room when done! Have a great week & weekend!

    1. Thank you, Linda! Oh my gosh, you sound just like me!! lol But hey, you’ve got to get the right one and it takes time…and lots of samples! I can’t wait for that room too!! Soon, I hope. Have a wonderful week!! xoxo
