How To Make Flower Petal Resin Earrings
Learn how to make flower petal resin earrings…and what to do, and more importantly, what not to do!!
Hello sweet friends!!
Remember when I was working with the resin and making trinket dishes using DIY air clay/resin and such? OH and earrings? Well, I still plan to create clay earrings, and I also want to compare 3 different types of store-bought air clay and share that with you. I’m still planning to do that very soon.
Today, I want to share earrings I made using real flower petals and resin. And I’ll share my fail too!! Well, not really a fail but a learning experience, I guess. lol Oh wait, what am I saying?? I had a huge learning moment to share today!! haha!!! Oh boy, do I.
This seemed like such an easy project, but I’d say it’s a little more involved. Definitely doable, though.
How To Make Flower Petal Resin Earrings
So I went around my house and gathered some things that were blooming, like Azaleas, a few leaves, Impatiens, etc. I thought I’d use some of the silica and dry them that way. Well, I did. It worked for some of them, not so much for others.

Oh, yes, I also dried the petals of the Mums from the pretty flowers my daughter gave me for Mother’s Day.

Silica crystals are great. They really do dry them out, but I think when using resin, it might be easier if they are mostly flat. They don’t necessarily get flat in silica.
MATERIALS SOURCE LIST

The Mums are such a pretty shade of lavender/periwinkle blue once dried.

The Impatiens blooms are from a plant (well, I’ve divided it and we have several now) that my son planted (and painted the planter) in 3rd grade! Isn’t that wild?? He is having his 10-year high school reunion this year, if that tells you how long that’s been!
I gently applied the resin…(the petals are very fragile)

…and gently spread it out.

Then, I cured them under the UV light.

The Impatiens didn’t work as well, but I was determined. lol
So, this is what I ended up with. I ended up breaking off one of the petals on the better-looking Impatiens bloom. Boo.

The leaves were just too bumpy, and I didn’t feel like messing with them anymore.
Then came my next thought. Let’s flatten some inside coffee filters and put them inside a book to dry.

For some reason, I thought these Dandelions would work.

Nope! They did with the drying, but I didn’t really consider all of those pokey edges. It would end up one big blog once I put resin on those.

And look how the color disappeared from the Impatiens blooms, drying them this way. Wow.
The Azalea blooms turned out pretty, though!
Added resin to them below.

So vibrant and pretty.
To smooth them out, I filed the edges with a small Dremel.

To fancy them up, I gave them a gold edge with a Gilder’s pen.

Then I gave them a final coat of resin.

I have plans for that giant Impatiens bloom. he he

Guess what I did next??
I used my handy-dandy manual drill to put holes for the jump rings for the earrings.
And, oh yeah, this. Oops. Big oops.

I was holding the earring and pushing so hard that I broke the top of the drill bit off, and when that happened, the rest of that force (and the rest of the bit) went straight into my fingernail. Right through my fingernail. Pop! Cringe.
Headed straight to the MedExpress because I was sure the metal was in my finger! lol
X-ray showed it wasn’t.
However, that thing went in with so much force and so deep that I managed to chip the tip of the bone in that finger. Golly, only me!!

That was a hard lesson learned!! lol
I shelved that entire project for several months after that. haha!
But here we are, hole in the nail all grown out, and I’m back at it. I did, however, purchase a little motorized drill instead. And as you’ll see in the photos below, I used clay packs to hold the earrings instead of my hand! No more of that mess!!

All have holes and are ready for putting the findings on for earrings.

Found these on Amazon. They are linked in the pink “Materials List” box.

This is a necklace I got on Amazon. I decided to take off the coin and put the large pink bloom on it instead.

It can be a statement piece, right?

I think they turned out so sweet.

I probably won’t make any more, but it’s fun to think I’ll forever have the Mums from my daughter and the bloom from my son’s plant.

Think you’d give it a try??
If you do, don’t be like me with the drill!! ha!
PIN it to save it!

Have a wonderful weekend, dear friends!!
xoxo
