Dated Bread Box Update
This very dated bread box update is the perfect addition to your kitchen decor! Great place to store bread, baked goods, and more!
Hello friends!
Happy Trashy Treasures Tuesday! How’s the pollen where you are? It’s crazy here this year! BUT it’s been raining all day, so it’s all washed away for now. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s done doing its thing yet! It’s fun to watch it all wash away for a bit, though. lol
I’m sharing a small one this month. A bread box that is in serious need of a new look. And an update from the 70s or could even be 80s. Who knows!
Dated Bread Box Update
Needs love, right??
And a cleaning! Yuck.
I popped that knob off. It was just stapled on.
Then I filled in the staple holes on the sides with wood filler.
Paint came next.
I cleaned it up, primed it, then gave it a coat of Casement (white).
MATERIALS LIST
- TSP Alternative
- Continuous Sprayer
- Casement
- Liberty Blue
- Paintbrush
- Garden Whispers Transfer
- Tough Coat Topcoat Matte
Prefer to shop on Etsy? I have an Etsy shop also, here!
Then I pulled this pretty transfer out to add to the bread box.
I thought blue and white would be pretty.
I always begin by cutting out several of the pieces and laying them around to see how I’ll want it to go.
I considered going all the way across as shown above.
I decided to only do one on the bottom/front area instead.
On the top left, I did go ahead with that design but then decided to make it a little larger/more substantial by adding some of these smalls to it.
There were several things I considered putting here for the lettering, but in the end I kept it simple!
I cut it out on my Silhouette Cameo to make a “stencil” with the vinyl.’
Then transferred it to my bread box.
And painted it with “Liberty Blue,” which I thought matched really well.
After that, I let it dry for a few minutes before removing the vinyl. (not fully dry though)
Isn’t that great? And so crisp and clean too. (I still needed to pull out the center piece vinyl above)
Once I was done with that, I sealed the whole thing with a coat of Tough Coat Topcoat in Matte.
And done!
So sweet in the blue and white! And so much better than how it started, for sure.
And you know I had to add some little surprises inside, right? ;)
Of course!
Fun, fun.
So happy I added the few extras on this one below.
It fills it out nicely.
And equally glad I only used the one on the front. Less is more, as usual.
Let’s see it “in use”.
Sweet!
PIN it to save it!
Don’t go yet! Hop on over and visit my friends below!
Have a great week, friends!

Thank you, Michele!! Definitely better than it was! :) xo
Wow, the bread box turned out great. I love birds and the transfer placements are perfect for this!
Thank you, Darlene!! The birds are so sweet! :)
So much better now, Nancy! The stencil looks hand painted and the color is perfect with the transfers.
Thanks, Marcie! xoxo
I love what you did to this breadbox! So pretty. You know I have an old one like this that came with a house we had bought lol. I think it has a curved lid. I’ve been wanting to redo it but to use for another purpose but have gone blank on what or where to use it. You have inspired me though to figure this out lol.
Thank you, Debra!! Yes, pull it out and make it pretty! You can use it for all kinds of things! Soaps and/or toiletries in the bathroom, phone charging station (put a hole in the back for the plug, mail or mail supplies, for example. xoxo
I have a breadbox I painted but love the stencils/decals you added. My question is I painted the inside of the breadbox, and it has retained the odor from the paint. I have tried everything. Therefore, not useful to put bread in. Any suggestions?
Hi Teresa! Yes, you can try giving it a coat of Shellac. Then repainting over it once that has dried. That should help take care of the odor.
