Do you have an awkward wall in your kitchen? See how I decorate a kitchen wall in mine! A simple idea with tons of style.

Hello friends!

I’ve been busy redoing again! And oops, I ended up doing something I hadn’t planned to do at all.

Isn’t that how it always goes?? Haha I think so! It’s not a big thing, but wow, do my husband and I both love the change. Well, one of the things I’m sharing today, I did plan to do. For a very long time, actually, as in years. And I finally got around to it and did it! Yay!

And the other unplanned thing, too. Here, let me show you.

Decorate a Kitchen Wall – A fun and simple idea!

I’ve been wanting to remove the mirror from this kitchen wall for many years now. I never really loved it there because it always just felt odd. It’s much too high.
Now, I did love the light it reflected and the way it made the kitchen feel more “open”. But beyond that, it really made no sense.

And an older photo (closeup).

See? YEARS! haha! (OH, and hey, look, that was so far back we still had our phone hanging on the wall there. Too funny.)

And here we are, finally.

I knew I couldn’t really put large or deep shelves in this space since it’s a walk-through area of the kitchen. Whatever I put up would need to be slim.

So, I ordered these to go on the wall.

Wayfair shelves

You can find them here.

Next, I went to TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, Marshall’s, etc., to find cutting boards, small frames, and small decorative items I like to go on the small ledge/shelves.

I had bags of “stuff”! I literally just randomly picked things I liked and figured I’d take back whatever didn’t work out. SPOILER — I didn’t end up returning one single thing!

Now, we’ll come back to that in just a minute. Let’s talk about the paint before we continue with how I decorated the kitchen wall.

wall where mirror was is different color

When we took the mirror down that had been up foreverthe paint underneath was a different color. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any more of the color, so I ran up to Sherwin-Williams to get more. (It’s a color-matched shade from Benjamin Moore – Pure White.)
Well, they also don’t have the same paint line as the last time I painted the walls. So, they mixed up a different line and said it should match fine.

It didn’t.

Which led me to thinking about the paint and wall color in general. I was sort of just on automatic thinking; I needed to touch up the wall before the shelves went up. So this gave me a pause.

And here’s what happened next! lol

painting the kitchen wall with the new color anew gray

It was time, y’all! Time for a change and time for some color in the kitchen, too.

I painted it all, and my husband walked in and said….whoaaaa!! He loved it!! Like, really, really loved it. Which is unusual for him, because he sometimes has to warm up to my ideas. Haha (But I did show him what I was planning before he saw the whole thing finished…I wouldn’t do that to him! Haha I painted a couple of spots and asked him what he thought about painting the kitchen; he was on board.)

I love it too.

OH! And it’s the same paint color I used on the ceiling in the room next door. Anew Gray SW 7030.

So it goes very nicely in the adjacent kitchen here.

Okay, back to these ledge-type shelves.

My husband put them up for me while I went off for the day with friends. My sweet guy. :)

tape on the wall and one shelf hung

I originally planned two long pieces, one above the other. I found these varying sizes and went with them instead.
They felt a little more interesting to me.

all three shelves are hung on the wall

Aren’t they fun?? I did have him line them up on the edges so they’d match there. And with one higher for my taller decor items.

I was SO excited to see them up when I came home later in the day. I quickly hung the hat I was wearing on the hook, along with my purse, and put the sunglasses on the shelf, then grabbed the bags of decor stuff and threw them all up there! Probably in less than 2 minutes flat. lol

Then I snapped a photo and shared it on my Facebook page.

Funnily enough, there was really no rhyme or reason to what I bought at multiple stores, but somehow I loved how I threw it all up there quickly. Most of it stayed in the same place in the end.

Here is how it turned out after I tweaked it a bit and added the photos to the frames.

I love this “kindness” print…

The photos are ones I took around the small water town we live in.

Here’s a view of the new wall kitchen wall decor with the other room I recently wallpapered.

And no, I have not done a thing with that cabinet yet! I’ve been sick this week, so I didn’t get a thing done, boo.

I think the new wall is so fun! It definitely makes more sense than the mirror did.

What do you think? Did you like the mirror better here?? Or this new setup?
How about the paint? White or Anew Gray??

PIN it to save it!

OH, I thought I’d give a little update on our room! Here is where we are at.

unfinished room with windows and new drywall with black and white pup jumping up in the middle of the room

See Piper?? She’s letting that little pup in the reflection (her in the skylights) know who is boss!! lol
But look! We are getting there. Insulate and shiplap the ceiling, add flooring, trim, paint, and we are on our way to DONE. Finally! Yippee!

Can you believe this is the same view/room??

I’m so excited for this new room to be done. We are so very close now.

Have an amazing weekend, friends!

xoxo

  1. I love the new kitchen wall. It’s so warm and inviting. From the paint, to the shelving to the decor added, very inspiring. So funny your pup going after the “pup” in the skylight :)

  2. Such an amazing improvement! Love that paint color with the wall paper in the living area. Can’t wait to see the new room finished with all of your touches on it!

  3. Love the changes! The shelves make much more sense, I agree, and will be fun to rearrange and change up for the seasons or just because if you want a different look, and because your house “flows” with a similar color scheme throughout, the items could be used in different rooms. I also like the contrast of the dark wood, and painting the walls really helps give your kitchen more interest (and tie in with the next room, like you said). You nailed it!

    1. Thanks, Vicki! I agree totally with every single thing you said!! However, I hadn’t even thought about the fun it would be to change it up for the seasons/holidays! Yes to that! xoxo

  4. I love the wallpaper in the living room and the new wall shelf in the kitchen. You are great at making everything look fantastic Nancy! Love you, Aunt Jo.

  5. Nancy! Brilliant! It is EXACTLY what that wall needed. Well done. Love it.
And your new room “addition” oh my gosh, not much longer now. How awesome is that?
Hope you’re feeling better and have a fabulous weekend. Take care.

    1. Yay, thank you, Michele!! Yes, not long at all. I’m ready to get to the FUN part!! haha!! Decorating! Thank you, friend, feeling so much better! xoxo

  6. The new shelves look great; what is the story on that cross in the water? The grey is a good alternative. What happens to all the furniture that was on that porch? That room is going to look so so good!

    1. Hi Mary! No story really other than the one you already know! :) Someone put it in in the marsh close to where I live years ago for that reason alone. A beautiful symbol of faith, hope and love. xo

And I sold the wood table and chairs. The other outdoor style furniture is going out onto the patio. I think! lol (it’s there now, and probably staying there)

  7. What a wonderful change you made, Nancy. I love the Anew Gray because it sets off the wall beneath. The shelves are perfect for fond memories, and can change with the holidays. How fun! Good job, girl! Thanks to the sweet hubby for lending a hand, too. That sweet pup is just adorable.

    1. Thanks, Caye! I think so too! I never loved that the wall beneath mostly blended in. I love the idea of changing them up for the holidays! I hadn’t thought of that. And yes, he’s a definite keeper!! xoxo
