Follow along on our next, very unexpected project: the laundry room update!!

Hey friends!

Did you happen to see my Instagram stories recently??

If you did, this might not be a surprise to you…If you didn’t, let me fill you in! haha! So, last week, our dryer decided to die. We probably could’ve gotten a fix for it, but they were about 11ish years old, and I’d been wanting a different type of washer, so we got a new set.
Our very first front-loading washer. (and a new dryer) I’d never been very interested in those, but my husband really wanted to go that route this time. And I didn’t really see any top-loading ones that I was crazy about.

However, I did like this set that we ended up with:

Front view of two black front-loading laundry machines in a modern Laundry Room, a dryer on the left and a washer on the right, both featuring digital control panels and circular doors—perfect for your next Laundry Room Update.

I didn’t want white this time, so we got the “Carbon Graphite” color. Which, as you can imagine, will change the whole look of our laundry room.
(You can find them here and here. By the way, we got them on their Memorial Day sale and got a great deal. I’ll tell you why later on this month. ;) )

A bright laundry room with white shiplap walls, a window, washer and dryer, open shelves holding jars and baskets, a wooden countertop, and a patterned rug—perfect for exploring removable wallpaper ideas.

But, if I never mentioned it (I think I have), I had already planned to paint these cabinets a medium blue. I have just never gotten around to it!! Now, I will have to. lol

Which leads me to why we are doing an “update” now.

A recent Laundry Room Update features white cabinets, an open cabinet door, cardboard boxes on the counter, a black washer and dryer, open shelves with various items, and a window revealing greenery outside.

Oopsie.

We did measure, but these are a tiny bit bigger than what we had, and, well, as you can see, they don’t fit! Even without the countertop.

Fun times. haha

Another project for us!!

Not planned and not needed. But here we are. So let’s go!!

We immediately got to ripping out cabinets. Like I said in my Instagram story, delivery day turned into demo day. Boo!

A partially disassembled wooden cabinet with exposed interior, tools, and construction materials sits beneath a window in a laundry room with wood floors. A cordless drill and vacuum are nearby, ready for the Laundry Room Update.

I’ve always wanted a sink in the laundry room, so I think we may add one this time. We will see.

When we redid our laundry room over to the version I shared above, my husband added on to the existing cabinet and created two cabinets on each side.

A bright laundry room with yellow cabinets, a window, farmhouse laundry plans, a washer and dryer side by side, a blue and white patterned rug, a chandelier light fixture, and wall decor above a laundry hamper.

We moved the washer/dryer down and added cabinets on either side of the one shown above and below.

A bright, organized laundry room with light wood cabinets, a washing machine, a patterned rug, and a modern chandelier. Neat and inviting with beige walls and tile flooring, it’s perfect inspiration for farmhouse laundry plans.

We also added that floor-to-ceiling cabinet set on the left for more storage.

And before all of that, it looked like this:

View through a doorway into a coastal farmhouse laundry room with wood-paneled walls, boxes, and cleaning supplies scattered on the floor. Text at the bottom reads Move-In Day (before).

Even I find it hard to believe this is the same room/house!!

Okay, back to the demo.

That old flooring under that old cabinet hasn’t seen the light of day since 1978! And it looks like it. lol

A section of floor in the laundry room features wood paneling on the wall, exposed subfloor with old yellow and brown patterned linoleum, wooden framing, loose wood pieces, and some small debris—a glimpse into a Laundry Room Update in progress.

So since it didn’t fit, it was time. Time for new cabinets in here, finally. So that is what we are going to do.

I’m fairly certain we are going to use these:

One of these… (find it here)

…and one of these on each side. (find it here)

I’m a drawer girl. I love kitchen drawers more than cabinets, so I’m excited about having some drawers in the laundry room.

Want to see some of the vision and help me decide??

I created, in great detail, a few different ideas with ChatGPT. I described the color blue I wanted, and the color blue that came up was actually exactly what I had in mind.
Here are a few “matches” per ChatGPT:
Sherwin Williams Smokey Blue (this is the closest option)
Sherwin Williams Slate Tile
Sherwin Williams Distance

A bright Laundry Room Makeover featuring blue cabinets, a wooden countertop, black washer and dryer, open shelves with baskets and decor, a sink with a gold faucet, and a blue patterned rug on wood flooring.

I was thinking I’d do some gold hardware this time, but seeing it, that’s a no. I also thought I’d change the wood to a lighter stain with the blue cabinets.

That’s also a no, haha!

A bright, modern Laundry Room with blue cabinets, a sink, wood countertop, black washer and dryer, wall shelves with baskets, a Laundry sign, and a patterned rug on wood flooring—perfect for your next Laundry Room Update.

Next, I tried it with a painted ceiling the same color as the cabinets. Which I really like.

We may change the light fixture. Unsure right now. Maybe something like this??

A modern laundry room update with blue cabinets, a built-in sink, dark wood countertop, black washer and dryer, open shelves with baskets, white shiplap walls, wood floor, and a patterned rug.

Trying to move a little away from the “farmhouse” look going on in there.

Then I flipped it and painted the walls, left the cabinets and ceiling white. (and bronze hardware)

A stylish Laundry Room Update featuring blue shiplap walls, dark wood countertops, white cabinets, black washer and dryer, shelves with baskets and decor, a window, brass faucet, and a gray patterned rug on wood flooring.

How about wood shelves instead of white (above and below)?? (By the way, the countertop kept getting darker and darker with each rendition; I won’t have it as dark as some of these photos show)

Oh, decisions, decisions!!

I like this version.

A modern laundry room update features blue shiplap walls, a wooden countertop over a black washer and dryer, white cabinets, shelves with baskets and decor, a gold faucet, and a patterned rug on the wood floor.

But this is the one I’m leaning towards below. I love the wood shelves, the painted ceiling, the blue cabinets, and the dark (not light) countertop. (and I put the wallpaper up in the bathroom since it wasn’t in this particular photo, so you can see how it looks with the blue going into there)

Modern laundry room update featuring blue cabinets, a sink, wooden countertops, black washer and dryer, open shelves with baskets, a patterned rug, white shiplap walls, and a window bringing in natural light.

So, tell me: blue cabinets with blue ceiling, or white cabinets with blue walls?
Oh, and white shelves or stained shelves?? New light fixture or keep current?

Or any other ideas? Share away, please!

  1. Blue cabinets, white walls and either shelving gets my vote. A sink is a great idea. What about a bigger one? I like having a deeper and larger sink for cleaning up my projects. Good luck!

  2. Wow that is REALLY an adventure! So fun!
The blue cabinets with bronze hardware, blue ceiling, white walls, dark shelves and counter tops have my vote. LOVE your “new” light choice. Maybe make things more interesting and use a co-ordinating wall paper to your living room some where?

  3. Love the white walls with blue ceiling and dark countertop!
Black hardware, faucet and shelves maybe?
Love the new fixture but maybe a bit more black detailing on the shade?
White faux wood blind or maybe a textured crocheted type cafe curtain on black tension rod mounted inside window?
To add a splash of color that will coordinate and bring in the adjoining room you could change out the rug, add something on the wall and decorative things on the shelves.
You have such excellent taste, I am confident you will figure it out and it will be a show stopper!
