First, let me say thank you for all the wonderful comments on my giveaway post! I read every single one of them. You guys are the absolute best!! I love reading about all the things you would use the paint on and the projects you have planned or have done. Please continue to share with me as I truly enjoy reading them.
So…speaking of giveaways…if you missed it on Tuesday, I have a brand new one going on this week. It’s a quicky one because I am trying to order things for you before they go out of stock. So hop on over and enter to win by Sunday as I’ll be ordering and shipping out Monday morning. :)

Okay, so the next one from the haul is done. Yippee!

Only 4 more to go. (and only one more to actually makeover as I’ve finished all the rest) Then I can move on to some bigger pieces that are glaring at me…and taunting me to finally make them over. haha

Today it’s the platter that is getting all the love … in all its plastic glory. lol

You might remember this one from the video Christy and I made of our latest thrifting adventure. (<<< see it there)

I brought it home with me because I thought it would make a pretty decorative tray. (and I’m a sucker for trays)

Beach House Platter – Plastic Thrift Store Tray Makeover

Here’s how I did it.

Since it was so slick, I decided to give it a light sanding all over first.

Then I cleaned it and sprayed it with white spray paint.

Pretty darn simple!

MATERIALS LIST

I saved this anchor to my computer from PicMonkey…

And cut it out on my Silhouette Cameo to create a stencil with vinyl.

Then I created this graphic from some inspiration I found online.
And since I was inspired by a similar piece online, I won’t be sharing this graphic. But it would be very easy to recreate since it’s so very basic.

I did the anchor underneath in a light gray.

Then I painted the words over top in aqua and darker gray.

Simple!

What a difference from the orange plastic tray it started out as, right?

To seal it, I actually only sealed the graphics that I painted on as I liked the finish on the platter and didn’t feel the whole thing needed sealing.

Obviously since this is more of a decorative piece it’s good to go.

It would make a cute gift for someone’s “beach or coastal” home. Or someone who just loves the beach.

Fun little side note…see that large book beside the cabinet? It is a book of old trees in Virginia and we were going to try to visit all of them. I thought “how fun would it be to take little weekend road trips to go see these old amazing trees?” And we never go around to it. Ugh Isn’t it like that in life? Busy always gets ya!
But I do plan to revisit that idea at some point in the future!

Super inexpensive decor. And easily transformed with spray paint and a stencil.

I might take it to our beach house. Or might not. lol I have a whole pile of things and our place is not that big to use them all. haha
So we will see.

I hope this inspired you to see what some of those very basic things can be transformed into the next time you go thrift shopping. :)

    1. OK, Nancy…tell me your secret to making a stencil. All the tutorials I see show that all the letters like O, e, b, B…..have to have a little opening sliced out so the inside of the letter is not lost. What do you do to keep all the insides from getting lost? This tray is precious. I finally went to the Goodwill and it was like shopping on Christmas eve! So much fun!! Love the big boats on IG!

      1. Oh yep! When I use the sticky transfer tape (the clear tape) to lay over the stencil I just made, it also sticks to all of those little inside pieces too. I just simply transfer all of it to whatever I’m stenciling. Then I paint it with those in there and then remove them, along with the stencil afterward. If you take a look at this post, you can see where I pulled off the main stencil and the inside pieces are still there. There is a little “pick” tool that you can pull those out with.

And oh my gosh, I bet it was!! I went into my first store this week too. The Fresh Market…and I can not even explain how wonderful it was to shop. Amazing what we take for granted!! xoxo

  1. Hi, Nancy. Cute tray makeover!
And just an idea on how I would use the Coastal Blue paint – thinking it would look great on a small vintage half moon shape side table with white trim. Nice for a beach house… Enjoy your day!

  2. Super cute tray makeover Nancy! Thanks for the links to the “how to” portions. :) This is so great and so lightweight as decor. Wonderful. You know I adore the colors, so beachy.
Be well and good luck to all who entered your giveaway!!
    xo

  3. Nancy…I am new to your blog, and thrift stores are slowly opening up here. I bought a sudden tray, to try my hand at chalk painting, you have given me inspiration! And I love
    coastal designs!

  4. Oh my gosh this looks SOOOO good!! Of course you know I love the colors you chose! I didn’t know how you were going to breathe new life into that thing when we found it lol, but you did it! XOXO

  5. Nope, never would think to pick up one of those plastic trays. Of course, if I had your vision, I’d rethink it! Hm, what would Nancy do with this? šŸ˜‚ No longer an unappealing tray, it would look great in your beach place, although I understand the overwhelming decor pile.

Tree trips sound like the perfect reward for staying home all this time, and something to look forward to when we’re able to start moving around again.

    1. Haha…I don’t always know what I’ll do with the things I find (actually, hardly ever!) but know it’ll come to me eventually. I think I know if I can (or can’t) do something with the things I come across though. Some I leave behind and some I don’t. (and some I wish I hadn’t later when I think of the perfect thing I could’ve done with it!lol)

Yes, that is a great idea! I’d love to revisit the tree idea at some point. :)
      xo Nancy

  6. Aaaahhhhh….soooo much better!!! You’ve got a steady hand and a light touch with the ole spray can!!!
Being quarantined would have been perfect to drive around and see those old trees!!!…staying in the car, of course!!!
    Have a good weekend!!!

  7. Maybe a silly thought, but looking at your pictures of this project made me think of it. Just wanted to comment on your staging for photos. You have gotten so good at it! I think that itā€™s a talent of its own. Youā€™ve come so far even since Iā€™ve been following you. Iā€™ve had this thought for awhile now and thought it was a compliment you might enjoy! Presentation is big!!

    1. Yes! I was going to ask where you take all your pictures; are they all in your house? Do you have a fake rolling wall to display them on? Do you borrow friends and family houses for certain settings?

How do you keep you house so darn clean and keep up with the rest of life?

I am really hoping for the win this month. I really want to get that armoire done! Those colors are perfect!

    2. Not a silly thought at all! And thank you so much. It is something I’ve worked hard on perfecting…that and my photography skills in general. So that is a huge compliment to me! Thank you again, Lyn! :)

  8. Iā€™m just in LALA land these days. I saw your post tonight when I finally got around to checking my emails and wondered why you were posting on Wednesday. HaHa! Iā€™ve gone through the entire day thinking it was Wednesday and itā€™s Thursday! I ran over a pothole this morning which ruined the rim of my tire and had to get towed šŸ˜¤ Guess that got me confused. You did such a good job on the tray. Glad you saved it! Have a great weekend!

    1. I’m so sorry about your car, Cecilia!! And yes, that happens to me all the time lately, too! :) xoxo

  9. Oh! This platter is SO beautiful! You have a good imagination to think of putting an anchor on it and changing it from orange to white. Believe me, not all of us created to think that way! Darn!! My daughter has loads and loads of artistic talent,…shows me up time and again,…oh well, don’t they say this is who we are leaving our world to? There is no one I’d rather leave this world to then my LOGICAL, smart, sweet 13 year old teenager!!

    1. Thank you, Diane! Aw, I think you might be underestimating yourself! :) And your daughter sounds amazing! xoxo
